Quilt top Instructions for Longarm Quilting

These instructions should be followed if you send us your quilt top to be longarm quilted.  If you have questions about your quilt preparation you can contact Jan Struble at quiltsbyjan@mindspring.com.

To help ensure that you are pleased with your finished quilt, please prepare your quilt top, backing and batting using the following guide lines.

1.  Press your quilt top and backing.  Remove any loose threads and animal hair from both the front and back of the quilt top. backing, and batting.  Please wait to add embellishments such as buttons and charms until after the quilting is finished.

2.  If outside borders are pieced then stay stitch around outside edge of top to reduce stretching.

3.  If your quilt has a head, please safety pin a note to designate the head.  Do likewise for your quilt back if needed.

4.  Make sure the backing and batting are 4 inches larger than the quilt top on all four sides.  For example, if your quilt is 80 x 80, then your quilt back and batting need to be 88 x 88.  This is required to ensure that the quilt mounts correctly on the machine.  If the backing is pieced, press backing seams open.  (See note below "Best Backing".

5.  Please do not use sheets as backing, as they are difficult to quilt.  Mountain Mist and Morning Glory batting brands do not work.

6.  Be sure the quilt top and back are square and without selvages.  Flared borders and puckered piecing cannot be corrected with quilting.  Please be sure that all seams and stitches are secure.  This is especially important for antique quilts.  If any of these problems are present when I receive the quilt top, I will have to return it to you to be corrected.

7.  Do not baste or pin your quilt top to the batting and backing

NOTE:   While all reasonable care will be taken, I cannot be responsible if the above guidelines have not been carefully followed.  All quilting is hand guided and some variations should be expected.

APPLYING BORDERS:   After the body of the quilt has been pieced, gently press before adding borders.  Measure the finished top along the outside edges and through the center.  Add the three measurements and divide by 3.  This will be the length of two borders.  Cut the two borders that length and pin them to opposite sides of the quilt matching the ends.  Center and ease in any fullness.  Sew and press.  Repeat this process for the other two borders.

MITERED CORNERS:  To Make mitered corners, consult a quilting book that contains instructions for finishing a quilt.

THE BEST BACKING FOR MACHINE QUILTED QUILTS:

1.  Is a minimum of 8" wider and 8" longer than the top

2.  Has selvages removed from seams

3.  Has seams that are pressed open

4.  Is squared and pressed.
